Shared Housing

Empathetic Encounters aims at developing a house/ housing project as a present-tense environment filled with immanent experiences of empathy. The search is not precisely “humanist” nor “post-humanist,” but to reinvestigate human subjectivity through re-program, re-form, and re-technologize our objective environment.

To live collectively is to manifest the tension between man and man, objects and objects. Your shirt, my mug, your sleeping, my writing...among the idiosyncratic and the collective, architecture meet human in the middle. In an unstable dialogue of gravity, tension, permanence and fluidity, a place called home awaits fulfillment - its encounters contain swift, deep, and timeless moments.

Empathy (Einfühlung) traces the object from the inside (the object’s center) to the outside (the object’s form)”

- Robert Vischer

Empathy is the process in which people project their emotions, ideas or memories onto objects. The English term was translated from German Einfühlung, literally “feeling into.” a concept coined in the 19th century by philosopher Robert Vischer, in his doctoral thesis On the Optical Sense of Form: A Contribution to Aesthetics.
For Vischer, Einfühlung theory explains the principles of art reading triggering emotions and bodily perceptions. This concept is to be distinguished from the concept of Mitfühlung (Sympathy), literally “feeling with”, which addresses mirroring the feelings of a peer human.

“If faced with a rock, for instance, one should stare deep into the place where its rockness begins to form. Then the observer should keep looking until his own center starts to sink with the stony weight of the rock forming inside him, too...To observe with empathy, one sees not only with the eyes but with the skin.”

– Rachel Corbett

If we could give life, give living freedom
Our desire shall be returned to the formless
For it is warmth, breeze, and clean water that I wish
In the chimney, window, and glass from your hands
I’ll return, and see the miracle occurs:
Close ended projection opens,
(architecture meets human in the middle)
you re-encounter what has existed before
its codes emptied, forms uncanny
In the constellation of intimate banality, something
anew at every moment, every glance
from your eyes your body to the stony surface
A recognition, an awaking, a discovery.
Elsewhere, off-site
Empathy rests in both parts of an encounter. One
and the other.
Platitudes of feeling, in-feeling, Einfühlung
Yielding, touching, supporting
Rock, paper, scissors
Forces of gravity, and the repelling counterforces too
Acting among our indissolvable cores and our collected spirits
Allowing us to chase the limitless, in our limited waking hours of life.

“it was a banal beauty that arrested him”
Vestige of previous lives falls in line with tomorrow’s shadow by coincidence
